Discussing CS4 Design Training - Update

By Jason Kendall

With so many different choices of computer training courses available on the market today, it's advisable to find a company who can guide you on one that will suit you. Professional companies will take the time to talk through differing job options that you might enjoy, prior to deciding on a computer training course that will give you the knowledge you need.

There's a wide range of courses to choose from. Some people simply want User Skills from Microsoft, whilst others want to get their teeth into Databases, Programming, Networking or Web Design - and these are all possible. But don't rush into it, don't pluck a course out of the air. Why not share your ideas with an advisor who knows this commercial sector, and will guide you to where you want to go.

By maximising state-of-the-art training techniques and getting rid of wasteful procedures, you will start to see a new kind of organisation offering a better quality of training and mentoring for hundreds of pounds less.

It's not uncommon for companies to offer inclusive exam guarantees - inevitably that means paying for the exams at the start of your training. Before you jump at the chance of a guarantee, look at the following:

It's become essential these days that we have to be a little more 'marketing-savvy' - and usually we cotton on to the fact that we're actually paying for it (it isn't free or out of the goodness of their hearts!)

If it's important to you to pass in one, then you should fund each exam as you take it, prioritise it appropriately and give the task sufficient application.

Take your exams somewhere local and find the best exam deal or offer available then.

Big margins are netted by a significant number of organisations that get money upfront for exam fees. For quite legitimate reasons, a number of students don't get to do their exams and so they pocket the rest. Believe it or not, there are training companies that actually rely on students not sitting all the exams - as that's where a lot of their profit comes from.

In addition to this, you should consider what an 'exam guarantee' really means. The majority of organisations will not pay again for an exam until you have demonstrated conclusively that you won't fail again.

The cost of exams was around the 112 pounds mark twelve months or so ago when taken at Prometric or VUE centres around the United Kingdom. Therefore, why splash out often many hundreds of pounds extra to have 'an Exam Guarantee', when it's obvious that what's really needed is study, commitment and preparing with good quality mock and practice exams.

If you're thinking of using a training academy that is still using workshop days as a benefit of their course, then consider these issues encountered by the majority of students:

* Lots of round trips - normally 100's of miles.

* If, like many of us, you work, then Mon-Fri workshops are difficult to make. Typically you are having to deal with several days in a row too.

* Lost annual leave - most workers are given only twenty days of leave annually. If over half of it is swallowed up by study classes, that isn't going to leave much vacation time for the student.

* Training workshops often become quickly full, giving us the only option of a slot that doesn't really suit.

* Class pace - classes typically consist of students of varying aptitude, therefore tension can be created between the quicker-learners and those who prefer a more relaxed pace.

* Quite a lot of students talk of the high costs involved with getting transport to and from the training centre while forking out for food and accommodation becomes prohibitively expensive.

* Keeping your training private from your employer will be of paramount importance to many students. Why give up any lift up the ladder, wage increases or accomplishment in your job because you're getting trained in a different area. When your boss discovers you're taking steps towards accreditation in another sector, what do you think they'll do?

* Many of us find it difficult to ask questions in a class full of other trainees - so we don't appear ignorant.

* For those of us who need to at times work or live away part of the time, imagine the trouble involved in getting to the necessary events, as time is now more scarce than ever.

The absolute best situation is by viewing a pre-filmed class - with instructor-led learning available whenever you wish.

Study can happen anywhere that suits. If you've got a laptop, you could get a bit of sun in your garden while you study. If you have any difficulties then logon to the 24x7 support facility.

You can do the study modules at any time you want to. You also don't need to take notes as you have access to the class forever.

Basically: You save time, hassle, money and altogether avoid killing more trees.
