How Is A DVD Recorder Player Useful?

By Martha Mitchels

.

VHS tapes used to be frequently used to record programs on TV. Once the DVD format became the norm at-home television recording had disappeared and been forgotten by the average consumer. This was mainly because many DVD player models did not support recording and services such as TiVo eventually became the norm in many households. But TiVo is not free, and neither is any other DVR service. Recording your own DVDs with a DVD recorder/player is almost free, but not quite.

Finding one can be difficult, especially at department stores or even some electronics retailers. DVD recording is not widely practiced because some people just don't want to purchase DVDs or keep track of how much space is left on them. Piracy got more prominent around the time DVDs really came to be common. Because of that, DVD recording is not something you hear about every day, even if you just want to record your home movies from VHS to DVD.

Several models of DVD recorder players are VHS and DVD compatible for the sole purpose of recording VHS movies onto DVD. This type of model is very useful if you have a large quantity of home movies or if you have a VHS collection that you just don't want to lose to deterioration. VHS tapes do not last forever, mainly because the tape itself inside the casing can deteriorate over time, but partially due to the fact that VHS players are outdated and are getting hard to find.

Just about any units that you can find which record and play DVDs are high quality models, mostly due to the fact that they are a sort of niche item. Reputable manufacturers do make them and they can be found on several online retailers. These kinds of player/recorders are also getting more affordable with each year that passes, just like regular DVD. The difference is that they can be much more pricey than standalone DVD players themselves. Luckily the prices of blank DVD-R and DVD-RW discs are getting increasingly cheaper, especially now that Blu-Ray is making its way to becoming the standard.

A high quality DVD recorder player is a solid investment if you are looking to save a good amount of money, this is especially true if you want to be able to make a new copy of your old tapes or just save your favorite TV shows. They have their definite uses and they will stay on the market for a while, but finding one that is worth your money can be a headache. But a little inconvenience for a useful feature can be worth it.
