The Evolving Trumpet

By Jim Samposzi

The trumpet, an instrument belonging to the woodwind or brass family, is built primarily of brass or bronze and includes: a mouthpiece, a horn, a spit valve, and buttons. The trumpet is among the instruments that are fully chromatic because it consists of three separate keys for tone control. Some trumpets also include a trigger line to fix any awkward sounds generated by the use of the few control keys. This line can be initiated while playing the trumpet and the difference is so smooth that the audience would not notice. The spit valve is there to release any fluid that has made its way into the trumpet. The history of trumpets is fascinating and these instruments go as far back in time; as far in history as 2000 B.C.

The melody of a trumpet is created by the combination, inclusion, or synthesis of the three top keys. The sound produced is possible because of the vibration of your lips via the mouthpiece and then further tweaked by the finger controls before the tone gets to the opening, or end, of the instrument. The mixing of combinations of air manipulation became very important to the exploration of certain types of music. Seeing as the finger controls can be adjusted to any tone, all types of music could include a trumpet sometimes.

The trumpet by nature, is pitched to go with the soprano section of ensembles. This means, the chromatic range of tones available start with F sharp all the way to C - before the clef responsible for treble affects. But, the abilities of this instrument are not confined to this range; some belt out notes in the G and high C area.

Trumpets, like many pieces of merchandise, come in several different styles and kinds. Some are bought more often than others. Furthermore, and due to this range, they vary widely in price. And, some have other features for pitching that are custom to the higher end trumpets. A few of the more common types of trumpets are:

Piccolo, Brass, Herald, Natural, Slide and Bronze

This incredible instrument was invented in 2000 B.C. where they were included in religious service. The first styles included materials that were blown into, like: a length of bamboo, or horn from wildlife, or bone. The bible contains many references to the trumpet and trumpets were found in the burial grounds of the acclaimed Egyptian King, Tutankhamen. In the 14th century, someone invented the folded trumpet that is like trumpets of today wherein the metal piping is folded and arched from beginning to end. The earlier trumpets were merely straight and elongated with a bell on one end and a mouthpiece on the other. During opera days, the trumpet was put to the stage in 1607 during a historical Opera titled Orfeo. Later on in history, trumpets were used for military communications but were later developed to play music. In the 19th century, these instruments became a must-have instrument for symphony orchestras. Today, the trumpet can be seen in jazz groups, military productions, marching groups, and at times, rock collaboration.
