How To Choose The Right Hiking Shoe Or Backpacking Boot

So, you want to get into hiking and you're not sure what to do first. Well, your feet play a big part in moving you down the trail and if you take care of them, they will take care of you. I would suggest finding a pair of supportive trail shoes or boots that will do just that.

Defining your use is the first step. Doing shorter hikes at the local parks with less challenging terrain requires only a good pair of trail shoes. These look like sneakers. The big difference is much better support. If you will be going on a multi-day hiking trip where you will be carrying a pack over more rugged terrain, you will need a pair of backpacking boots.

No need to be familiar with each manufacturer to make an informed decision. There are 5 common parts that every pair of outdoor shoes has. As long as you know what they are and how to test each shoe for them, you will always make a good choice.

The tread on the bottom of the shoe is called the outsole. The best outsoles provide traction in all kinds of conditions. Look for tread designs that are staggered and avoid those that are uniform. Staggered treads provide better traction while readily releasing dirt, mud and debris.

The midsole is a layer of material above the outsole. You can only see the outside edges of it. The purpose of the midsole is to disperse kinetic energy shock. Every time the force of your foot hits the ground, an equal and opposite shock rebounds back up through your anatomy. Without a sufficient midsole, your tendons, ligaments and cartilage would be responsible to radiate and disperse most of that kinetic energy. Without a sufficient midsole, your body tires easily, your joints become sore and your muscles sometimes ache.

How can you tell if a boot or shoe has a good midsole? Hold the back of the shoe in your left hand, put the front of the shoe against the palm of your other hand and apply pressure. The front of the shoe will start to bend upwards. Some shoes produce more resistance than others. The more resistance, the more support the midsole provides. Most footwear without sufficient support just fold in half. Your choice must still be flexible. The stiffer the shoe, the less likely you are to feel trail debris under your feet which can be dangerous. You don't want to loose contact with what's happening under your feet.

The footbed, commonly referred to as the insole is a thin piece of material cut to fit the inside shape of the shoe providing support and cushioning to the anatomical curvature of the bottom of your foot. Most manufacturers supply insufficient footbeds with their boots and shoes. Once removed, if you can easily twist them out of shape, they will only provide minimal cushioning and no real support. You may choose a shoe or boot and use the original footbed, but over time it will compress and you will loose the cushioning. You may wish to try a replacement footbed with actual support. My favorites are called Superfeet. A good footbed provides proper anatomical support for your feet and body, significantly reducing stress.

The upper is the material of which the main body of the boot or shoe is manufactured. The most common materials are leather, synthetic leather, nylon, ballistic nylon and breathable mesh panels. The upper also contains the tongue, lacing hardware and laces. A shoe or boot made of full grain leather traps more heat, has less breathability and takes more time to break in. Having mesh panels makes for a more comfortable shoe in warmer conditions.

The height of a shoe or boot provides no ankle support, only abrasion resistance and protection from rain, snow, mud etc. Ankle support is provided by something called the heel counter. The heel counter is a rectangular piece of material between layers of the upper at the back of the shoe just above the outsole, wrapping around the heel area.

If you drew an imaginary line straight down the very back center of a shoe, it would cut the heel counter in half. If you compressed the shoe between your palms on either side of that line, shoes with little ankle support would fold flat along the line toward the bottom near the outsole. A shoe with superior ankle support will not easily fold at the lower back of the shoe.

There you go. Now you know what to look for and how to test for it. The only remainder is how the shoe fits and feels and you will have to figure that out for yourself. If you feel YES, when you try on a boot or shoe... you know you have a good fit and I know you will know, when you have a definite NO. There is no MAYBE!

8. Ole Miss to compete for the SEC. I really like this team this season because of a relatively weak division (save for Florida), and the fact that I do think they can actually beat the Gators, though not every time out. Snead seems to have Tebow's number and I see this team making the Sugar Bowl.

7. Virginia Tech. A bit under the radar this year after a letdown in 2008, as the team lost four games. However, there's really not much competition in the ACC and the Hokies should start out at number seven for that reason. A tough schedule may force them to sink in the rankings.

6. Ohio State. I could see Ohio State back in the national title game, assuming the team wins the games it's supposed to. Terrell Pryor will do some great things for this team, and if they don't make the BCS championship, a Rose Bowl is in the cards.

5. Alabama. Yet another team that could easily compete for the BCS championship. Alabama should coast through most of the season, save for its match-ups against LSU, the Vols, and the Rebels. While an undefeated season is unlikely, the team's finish shouldn't be too far off.

4. USC. The hardest game for USC will take place against the Buckeyes, which takes place during once of the first few weeks. This is a young team and will be tested many times throughout the season. Still, there's plenty of talent to go around and this team could go all the way.

3. Oklahoma. Some of the best wide outs in college football, the returning Heisman champ at quarterback, and a polished team all around makes Oklahoma a sure contender for the BCS championship. The team's biggest hurdle is fellow division mate, Texas.

2. Texas. The Longhorns are simply one of the best out there, and Colt McCoy should have a huge season, as he's eyeing a Heisman. There aren't many better defenses out there and Texas remains a favorite to make the title game.

1. Florida. As long as Tim Tebow is on the team, there's no reason to discount this team's ability. Almost all of the entire team last season (besides Harvin and Nelson) is back for another season, and Florida has the experience and the talent to go all away. The Gators are the favorites entering the season.

Top Ten Hiking Essentials

Here is a list of must have items sure to make your outdoor experience safer and more enjoyable. These are applicable for dayhikes and backpacking trips.

One of the most important things is having a map of the trail you will explore. Get one at the park visitor center or find one online that you can download. This will keep you from getting lost, help you identify new trails to check out and possibly help rescuers locate you if you're in trouble.

Get yourself a good map reading compass. Using the map and compass together, you can orient your map to your direction and surroundings, choose the correct path and keep yourself on course.

Always carry two, one liter water bottles. Two liters is the minimum daily intake but chances are you will require more. Hiking is a physical activity and through perspiration, exposure and climate you can become dehydrated quickly. Bring some type of water purifier with you. For personal use, I take liquid treatment with me. Although you can survive a month without food, you will only last a few days without water.

Have extra food with you. Enough so that you could get through another day if necessary. Some companies produce compressed whole food bars that serve as complete meal replacements. My favorite is called the Pro Bar. Taking a few of these with will extend your energy levels if you need them.

A few more layers of clothing for comfort and safety. Temperatures can drop unexpectedly or at nightfall. If you hike through rain or fall into a creek, having only one layer of wet clothes when it starts getting colder can spell disaster. Make sure to wear synthetics as they are more insulative when wet and dry quickly.

Take a flashlight with you. You may want to purchase a headlamp so that you can be hands-free. Every once in a while, you will be out a bit later than expected. Negotiating a hiking trail in the dark is dangerous.

A good personal first aid kit is a must. If you like, you can make one yourself but be sure to include moleskin, triangular bandages and specifics for the outdoors. Don't forget any personal medications. Take a basic wilderness first aid course to help you understand common outdoor injury and illness.

On rare occasion one must light a fire in the backcountry as a matter of survival. I've been on a kayak trip where someone overturned and they were soaked just as the temperature started to drop. Do not light a fire unless absolutely necessary. Bring matches and a lighter in a waterproof case and use caution to avoid wildfires.

Carry a knife with you. Mine has come in handy so many times. If you use a folding knife, make sure that it has a locking blade. Non-locking knives have closed on fingers!

Last but not least, UV protection. Bring a hat with a brim, sunblock and a pair of sunglasses if you will be out in the sun for an extended period. Your eyes and skin will thank you.

The Koala - Death of Sam The Bushfire Koala

February 2009 saw a huge natural disaster in Australia - The Victorian Bush Fires. In total, 210 people lost their lives and thousands lost their homes and livelihood. The fires burnt over 400,000 hectares.

There was one ray of hope that united the nation during these difficult times - the rescue of a Koala called Sam. Millions saw the video of Sam being given water from a fire fighter. The Koala had second and third degree burns on its paws but recovered well at South Ash Wildlife Refuge.

It turns out that Sam the Koala had a disease called "Urogenital chlamydia" This disease has affected nearly 50% of the Koala population particularly in the Victoria area. It may sound familiar to you as Chlamydia is usually associated with a human sexually transmitted disease. Koalas are affected similarly with females becoming infertile. Other symptoms include urinary tract infections and even loss of sight.

Sam the Koala was to have an operation to remove some cysts caused by the disease. Unfortunately when they came to operate, it was clear that the disease was much more wide spread and nothing could be done. It was decided to allow Sam to be euthanized rather than let her suffer.

The firefighter, David Tree, was said to be very upset at the news of Sam's death. After all this Koala had shown real survival skills and had become a symbol of hope for the Victorian Bush Fire survivors. The good news is there will be a commemorative plaque put up near the place he was found.

A native animal to Australia, the Koala is a must see animal on your visit to Australia. You'll see them high up in the Eucalyptus trees if you are lucky. This is their main food supply and actually gives them 90% of their water requirements. It's very rare for them to drink water.

They are marsupials which means they carry their young in a pouch. The baby Koala is called a joey and is only 2cm long when it is born. It then lives inside the pouch for about 6 months. After that it spends time in and out of the pouch until it is big enough and strong enough to survive on its own.

Koalas are sadly not as common as Kangaroos so seeing one on your trip is a little tricky. Wildlife parks and Koala sanctuaries are great places to see Koala bears especially as some of these places will in fact let you hold them. There is nothing better than seeing one in its natural habitat in the wild. If you know where to look you have a good chance of seeing one in the wild.

Just don't think about trying to give them a cuddle in the wild. If you disturb them, they can be very vicious. You only need to take a look at their claws to work that out.

Harley Davidson HOG The Limelight With A Momentous Bike Release And Anniversary Celebrations

Who on earth decided that 105 years was a milestone event? Apparently Harley Davidson did. Not content with celebrating their Centenary in style, the ever saturnalian motorcycle manufacturer pulled out all the stops to celebrate their 105th anniversary, almost completely ignoring their loyal owners club who were celebrating a true milestone. 2008 was also the Harley Owners Group's (H.O.G) 25th Silver Anniversary.

Several events were planned by Harley Davidson to mark the occasion. Kicking off a full four days of partying was an organised State-Wide ride-out. Beginning at 105 separate dealers across the country the run was planned to culminate at the Milwaukee lakefront and follow naturally through to a non-stop festival of activities and music. They also opened a museum dedicated to the history of the brand and produced a limited edition styling pack for 14 separate models in their range.

The 105th Anniversary models all featured exclusive two-tone paint schemes in copper and black with copper vinyl inserts tastefully inlaid into the saddles and copper shield decoration on the tanks and air cleaners. Some of the top models also featured something new. Something which made me stop and think when I heard it. Harley Davidson factory fitted Brembo disk brakes with advanced ABS! For a minute I even thought I was going to faint.

These aren't just any old bike ABS systems either. Because of their age-old tradition of style and image before any other consideration - a tradition which has served them extremely well by all accounts - fitting and amending an already existing setup wasn't even on the agenda. Instead the crafty engineers at HD designed a unit from the ground up and hid it almost entirely within the wheels!

Top of the Harley Davidson range in 2008 was the CVO Ultra Classic Electra Glide. This is a bike with more features than an American sitcom. It has a 160 Watt stereo system, Satellite Navigation, Cruise Control and even heated leather seats! With the addition of ABS that doesn't even lock up when applied on gravel it becomes something truly magnificent.

Then there's its positively huge Twin Cam 110 engine to consider. There's a full 1803 cubic centimetres of V-Twin power under the tank of these monsters. And it's fully rubber mounted to allow the traditional Harley Shake to continue unhindered without affecting rider comfort over whatever distance you care to ride. It hardly rattles the bike at all but still sounds so beautifully 'Harley' and looks the part as well.

So who would ride a bike like this? Maybe the same kind or person who would ride a Honda Goldwing? No, I doubt it. This bike might fit into the same category as the ubiquitous 'wing' but it has infinitely more style. After all, it's a Harley Davidson and they know a thing or two about image don't you think? Oh, and did I mention that the brakes work on this one?
