The Importance of Writing in PC Games

By Edward Elric

One of the prime success quotients in any interesting computer game depends upon the game writing. Role playing games and personal shooter games are the two basic and most popular genres of computer games. In fact, some of the first video games ever made were shooters, as they were simple and easy to program.

During the early years of video games, all you needed was a slightly entertaining and playable game to get ahead. There is much more competition now, and for a developer to get the edge they need, a quality story is required.

Deus Ex is one of the best examples of an excellently written game, which originally had two dialogue writers. Believable and insightful lines did the trick for this particular PC game. Along with that a grasping storyline with interesting characters make it worth a shot.

It seems that the storyline in many modern games are lackluster, and more focus is put in to the visuals. While the latter is certainly quite important, the former is what makes a game truly great. Without a story, there is only so far a game can go.

This makes one game seem like a repeat of its own predecessor, only with some technical advancement features added along. Hence, there remains too many loose ends to the story, leaving the player dissatisfied more often than once.

The number one place you will find games without storylines is on the Internet. Many games online are just mindless shooters or adventure games. As developers, at least a half-hearted effort should be made to incorporate some kind of storyline.

Even if a game has stellar writing, it needs to be complemented by the other aspects of gaming. In fact, a game with amazing graphics and gameplay can be successful without a good story.

Creating a game is a challenge, and it generally takes six months to two years to develop a game (although this timeframe can be expanded for big productions). Due to the amount of complexity in games, it is rare to find ones that are blended together flawlessly, but they are definitely out there.
